Beavers always construct a dam; a spider a web. a termite a mound:
These are 'external structures' always associated with a specific species.
The term, 'extended phenotype' describes an organism's impact on the environment.
The term, coined by evolutionary biologist, Richard Dawkins,
States that the structure is an extension of the organism's genes,
Even though it is constructed 'outside' of its body.
A 'biogenic structure' defines any physical structure
Created by a living organism: (coral reefs, bird nests).
'Extended physiology' is a specific type of extended phenotype:
(a termite mound regulates a colony's oxygen and temperature).
'Niche construction' is when an organism alters its own environment,
Through the evolutionary process of building structures,
Which change the survival pressures for later generations.
I find these concepts most interesting and profound.
Might I apply the 'extended phenotype' concept to human housing,
Or would it also be classified as 'niche construction'
Which evolved from a chimp's leafy nocturnal sleeping nest,
To huts, igloos, tents, teepees, cabins, (cities?), etc.,
To our present-day houses,
Which are ubiquitously and constantly constructed everywhere?
A home is the fulfillment of the 'American Dream.'
One's success in home ownership is often used
To measure another's success!
