Historically it was thought blood flowed
Through the body in the form of tides.
Vessels were discovered much later,
First through body snatching from cemeteries.
Transfusions were deadly at first because
The several blood types were, again, unknown.
Today voluntary blood donations are the mainstay
To maintain our nation's blood banks.
It was announced today that our blood banks
Are at an emergency low level, a dangerous situation.
The most universal type lacking is the often used
Type O-negative, sought by so many in need.
Summers are an especially vulnerable period because
High school and college blood drives greatly decrease.
With low-stored blood supplies, emergency care
Becomes more precarious.
Another creature vulnerable because of its blood supply
Is the Horseshoe Crab, the blood of which is harvested
And utilized to test for impurities in various medications.
The over-harvesting process involves placing this crab
In a pending state towards extinction.
