Horse Meat for Dinner opus 886

Well, I was chatting with my grandson, Jayden,
While he was commuting home from work.
I read him some poetry, and chatted about his work.
I brought up a story about my childhood, which he enjoyed.
My mother was ill when we were children,
So she hired a young lady to help with the household.
One evening, shortly after the helper had newly arrived,
She prepared supper for us all, using a packaged pound of meat,
Which my mother had moved from the freezer to the refrigerator.
My mother ate while resting in bed,
While we three children ate in the kitchen.
Sometime after dinner, my mother asked about the meal.
The meat had been frozen and was in a cardboard wrap,
With pressed metal 'covers' at each end.
The printing and a picture of some sort were a pleasant blue.
The brand name was Hill's, which mother asked about first.
With gentle horror, she realized that what we had consumed
For that dinner meal was a pound of Hill's Horse Meat,
Originally intended for our Blue Merle Collie dog.
I, personally, at about 8-years-old, was quite pleased
That the mistake had been made. It tasted good.
Also it added another tale to my relatively short life,
Of which have now multiplied into perhaps a thousand!
